Today I got the chance to get out and shoot a little more with the new Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye Lens. Here are a few of the shots.
I find that sometimes you will get a what I call a “happy accident”. This was the first shot of the day. I had the camera setup from another shoot and the image was way over exposed, but I liked how the eyes were still recognizable so when I got it into post I decided to put even more emphasis on them by making everything else black and white. I know that this effect is really popular, I have gotten the questions a bunch. ”How to colorize only one part of an image” is my next post.
I wanted to play around with the limits of the lens in relationship to my subjects. So when I got in front of the camera I did just that. I love the fisheye effect and I am excited to work with it more.
“Sitting on Top of The World”
One of the great shots using the fisheye is straight down on your model. The way the lens distorts the horizon makes it look like the model is sitting on top of the world. The effect is so surreal.
The fisheye lens is not really a lens that most photographers need in their bag. I got the lens mostly for fun. One of the reasons I bought the lens is because I like interesting images. There are many different ways to get interesting images. Some people like to use post production to add effects, some shoot during power hour, some people like to use straight photography and just find an interesting perspective. I have used all of these methods and enjoy having them in my arsenal of photographic techniques. I added the fisheye lens just to have one more option when I am planning a shoot, and to have fun. I realized recently that most of my photographic purchases have been for this shoot or that shoot. I do not want my creativity to get dull because I am not pursuing the “fun” side of photography. I think that by allowing yourself to pursue something that is purely creative and not business driven you will develop new skills you can use down the road. Plus there are just some of us who love fisheye, now I can say I am one of those.
I will be shooting more with the lens as the weather continues to get better. We froze today getting these shots. I am interested to know what you are doing to make interesting images. Leave a comment and a link to your most interesting work.
