This is a debate that rages on between people in the photographic community. My opinion is that each has its place. There are pros and cons to each film and digital photography. Since this site is geared towards digital I will share with you only the need to know info on film
Pros and Cons
Pros
1. Better Resolution because you are able to use film sizes that are much larger than the sensor sizes available in digital cameras. Many photographers are still using film because of this.
2. Film can give you a different color feel that digital. Its often related to a proprietary design.
Cons
1. Film is slower to from snap to viewing. Meaning you have a much longer lag time between when you snap the picture and when you actually get to see the picture. Digital cameras often come with an LCD screen that allows for instant viewing.
2. With film you have to carry film around on your shoot. Digital cameras memory is so great now that many times you can shoot 500-1000 frames before having to put in a new memory card. Film is still 12, 24, or 36 frames (most often).
There are many other reason a photographer would choose one or the other but these are the main few and will give you a quick look at the difference.
