Here we are again its Friday and I am thinking about what I want to shoot this weekend. I ussually get inspired by articles that come out right before the weekend like this one. I read, I get excited and I plan a weekend shoot that will both push me as an artist and build my portfolio. This happens to me every weekend. I get excited about getting out into the world and shooting “personal work” I like taking a little time to shoot what I want. So all week long I work on other stuff that makes me a living and then on the weekend I go out and “party”. Does this make me a weekend warrior?
For me it has worked out good. I woke up this morning to one of my images in the local paper featured on a full page. This was unexpected, and it happened because of a busy weekend I had about a year ago. I did some work with Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band and they are using some of the shots to advertise this years summer tour. So in this specific case, pushing myself to the limit and using my weekends to work really paid off. I am excited to see my work featured in the paper and that makes that weekend worth it.
My friend once told me that the reason he goes to work at 5.30am and works till 6pm every day is because he wants to get in 1.5 Average days work every day. He says by his reasoning this will give him 50% better quality of life financially. Good thing he loves what he does. I operate at a similar pace when the weekend comes if I have an opportunity to shoot something I like I will take it. This gets me more time shooting things I like to shoot and more exposure for shooting this type of work.
Are you a weekend warrior? I would like to know if anyone else out there has a similar pattern going on with their photography. Are you working on the weekends? If so post a link to some of your work. Tell me what you have been working on. I would love to know what the other weekend warriors in my field are spending their weekends refining. Have a great weekend everyone.
