As you already know I believe that having an online journal or Blog is important for a photographer to do. I think this is a good idea for many reasons. One, it gives you an open forum to talk about your work with your clients and potential clients. Two, it allows you to organize your thoughts and really get solidified in what you are doing. Three, if you are blogging on your own domain it opens you up to much more search engine traffic organically. This can be very beneficial to meeting new clients.
Blogs – You may have heard the term Blog thrown around lately, or you may be blogging daily already. Whatever the case professionals everywhere should get familiar with the blogosphere. First of all blog platforms (the software that powers the blog) are some of the easiest ways to setup a web presence today. You can buy your domain name and hosting and you can usually host a blog platform like wordpress for free. In my opinion WordPress is the most powerful blog platform. You have many features available to you. They allow third parties to develop features (plugins) so there is always a stream of new free features.
WordPress themes- Choosing a theme is important. You want one that showcases your photography but also can be navigated well by your customers. There are a few options for choosing a theme. I would start by checking.
Elance.com- If you are looking for something special hire a freelance designer. I use Elance every time I need a project done. I rely on their feedback from customers to find a good company.
TemplateMonster.com - You can search specifically for wordpress themes. This makes it really easy to sort through all the templates.
If you are looking for a feature chances are wordpress and the plugins available have it but if for some reason they do not, you may want to look into the other blogging platforms. They are Typepad, Blogsmith, Movable Type, Gawker, Blogger and many others.
